Marvelous Madrid

A typical evening at the park

Parque del Retiro, Madrid

A gathering place at the Retiro Parque

Boating at the park looks like fun!

Advertise | AdChoices

From being a royal retreat in days of old (built in 1632), this beautiful Retiro Park was opened to the public in the 1800's and is filled with life every day of the week. Our first stop in Madrid upon arrival was (had to be, of course) at a cafe for a refreshment of tapas and a pitcher of Sangria, followed by an evening at this majestic park. People of every age watching clowns, musicians, performances, boating in the man-made lake...wish I were there again!

It is winter here, and I was looking through pictures of Spain we took last summer. Just had that pang, you know, that strong desire to go back there!

Yay! Thank you, Shelby. You must go, if you can.

Hope you are feeling stronger!

It's better, just different routines, now, which is weird.

I'm probably going to visit my sister in London this fall - we just may hop over there.

I know the weirdness! These fur babies have a strong presence in our lives.

Visiting your sister will be fun, even though it is still some time before you do. You could likely get a really cheap flight to Madrid from there. London in the fall, huh? Cold, rainy, gloomy...yuck! It's still London, though and beautiful, and with a sister to keep you warm, it sounds like fun.

I've been over at different times of the year - you take your chances each time. She's having a miserable winter, so I'm hoping the fall will be nicer - earlier September. We went to France on a "day trip" once, so I think a couple days in Spain would be pretty nice.

You would need more than a couple of days, Shelby! Even if you are visiting just one city or town.

Not a dusty street or churro vendor's donkey anywhere. I'm disappointed. :-)

Heck, not even the Plaza de Toros!

Sorry, it looks too clean, but guess what - how about a picture of stark naked bikers (bicycles)? I grouped these as the park pictures, but I do have one of those, if you are interested, and a plaza del Toros in Seville! I wasn't sure if the picture of naked people would be considered "profane" on NV! They caused not a quiver on the streets of Madrid - that's for sure!

Hey, Kearney, how about the quiver in Missouri today? Still alive and well, I see!

Yeah, not sure I'd encourage any nekkid photos.

I think that was a New Madrid thing. (Oh, and remember that is Maa'-drid in these parts.) I didn't feel a thing.

That's why I didn't post it! Funny thing, I was not the one who saw them, it was my 18 year old daughter who had decided to go for a run towards the park! She had to get a picture so I would believe her.

Thank you, etva. It really is. Of course, we have the New York Central Park here, but it's not the same! I ain't a good photographer but at least they make good cameras - lol!

Neetu, I love the old world architecture combined with all of the white flowers. It has a processional quality to it.........marvellous combinations, and you got some great photos to display that feeling. It's as if a person is really there!!

Thanks for the share, I really enjoyed, and will visit again,

Thank you, Kara! Now that you mention it, yes, it does appear to have a "processional quality". So glad to see you come by! I might do an article with photos on markets and foods we explored in Madrid and Barcelona soon.

Neetu, do you know about the Foto Friday group?

Also, do you know about the "happening" on leap year day, of taking sunsets right where we are?

rottlady wrote an article on it, and it sounds fun.

I'll provide some links later on when I wake up, unless someone hits this article sooner and takes pity upon me................boo hoo, Kara is so tired..........LOL. Isn't everyone at times?? A day of complete and utter exhaustion. Looking forward to tomorrow, or more correctly, later on today!!

                  G'nite all..........

PS Here is rottlady's article on the leap year event:

                  http://bigmomma.newsvine.com/_news/2012/02/01/10283358-photographers-unite-shoot-your-view-of-the-sun-on-leap-day-2-29-2012?last=1329553744&threadId=3334512&sp=0&pc=25#last_1

And Foto Friday, if you are interested, just apply as with any other group...........

Obviously I was delusional about signing off just yet........I wonder if I inadvertently consumed sugar in some food today. We were "eating on the run" and so that was the way things went. It tends to keep me awake.

Yes, Kara, I have seen many Newsviners who are part of the group. I just don't know if my photos are comparable to those expertly taken ones! And I did also see the leap year sunset photo event along the vine, and if I wake up in time for sunrise, and it is a sunny day, I may send mine in.

Kara isn't the only tired soul here - I am always tired! I consume coffee without sugar, and lots of it some days! It doesn't seem to keep me awake enough, though, I wonder why.

I hope you feel less tired tomorrow, and I hope I do too! Thank you for keeping me up to date on things - I am rather forgetful so it is a big help!

Neetu M. I used to shoot photos of Maui when I lived there. What beautiful photos I use to think..then laugh..what a beautiful place. Kind of hard to mess up a 300 foot waterfall or a whale exploding from the ocean. I know what you mean...LOL..Always stay in beautiful places!
